Can HBOT Improve Cognitive Function in Alzheimer’s Patients?

A Closer Look at HBOT and Alzheimer’s

In a 2024 systematic review, researchers analyzed 11 randomized controlled trials encompassing 847 participants. Their findings indicated that HBOT significantly improved cognitive functions and daily living activities in Alzheimer’s patients. They also noted reduced oxidative stress markers and inflammation cytokines in the blood, major factors accompanying the development and progression of Alzheimer’s. Importantly, the review deemed oxygen therapy safe and effective for dementia patients, with no significant adverse effects reported1.

A separate study published in 2020 investigated the effects of HBOT on individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). In the study, 42 Alzheimer’s patients and 11 aMCI patients underwent daily HBOT sessions for 20 days, each lasting 40 minutes. Their cognitive functions and daily living activities were assessed before treatment and at one, three, and six months post-treatment. A control group of 30 Alzheimer’s patients did not receive HBOT.

The results demonstrated the neurological benefits of HBOT for dementia, with both Alzheimer’s and aMCI patients experiencing significant improvements in cognitive function and daily living activities up to three months post-treatment. Plus, imaging revealed enhanced glucose metabolism in some patients, indicating improved brain activity2.

These findings suggest that HBOT may be a promising non-drug therapy for slowing disease progression and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with dementia. Still, it’s important to manage expectations. Patients will require occasional maintenance sessions to minimize symptoms.  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy demonstrates memory improvement and reduced symptoms, but it’s not a guaranteed solution.
